Into the Deep Forest with Henry David Thoreau
by
Jim Murphy

Introduction

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American writer and naturalist. He lived for two years at Walden Pond in a small cabin that he built and he tells of his experiences there in Walden, his most famous book. He also wrote essays that, along with his book, greatly influenced American thought. His essay, "Civil Disobedience", influenced both Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Into the Deep Forest with Henry David Thoreau is an excellent little book to introduce students this great American writer. It begins with a short biography of Thoreau and then Jim Murphy takes us on journey with Thoreau into the woods. His excerpts from Thoreau's journals and writings are very accessible for younger readers and the illustrations by Kate Kiesler are wonderful.
