The United States Constitution: Slavery & Voting

Hello Everyone,

The following are two amendments to the United States Constitution. The first(Article 13) abolished slavery and the second(Article 15) gave voting rights to men regardless of race. It should be noted that women did not legally have the right to vote until 1920(Article 18). Frederick Douglass fought for all these rights though he did not live to see women get the right to vote.

Amendments to the United States Constitution

Article 13(1865)

Section 1

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Article 15(1870)

Section 1.

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

Section 2.

The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
