In 1859, the year of Doyles birth, Edwin Laurentine Drake drilled the world's first oil well in Titusville, Pennsylvania. This first oil well produced 422 gallons per day. In the same year Charles Darwin published The Origin of the Species in which he explained his theory of evolution. Though controversial when it was first published his ideas are widely accepted today. Gaston Planté invents the battery, which is why my flashlight works. Thanks Gaston.
In 1930, the year of Doyle's death, Clyde William Tombaugh discovers the planet Pluto. More startling, however, is the introduction of mechanically sliced bread. Otto Frederick Rohwedder spent 16 years developing his bread slicing machine. The sandwich will never be the same. Paul Dirac publishes Principles of Quantum Mechanics. His ideas take into account Einstein's theory of special relativity. Dirac wins the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933.
