This Literature Unit Is:
"The Adventure of the Speckled Band"
by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Introduction
Although Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote many other books, ones he sometimes wished he was more remembered for, it is a character he once killed off and had to bring back to life because of public outcry who has become his most remembered and beloved creation. There may be some debate about who is the second greatest literary crime-solver of all time, but there is no debate about who is the best, who is the greatest. His name is Sherlock Holmes.
"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is from the first set (there were 24 of them) of Sherlock Holme's stories originally published in the Strand Magazine from 1891-1893. Some critics believe that this first set of stories were Doyle's best, better than those he started writing 8 years later after he brought Holmes back from the dead. Doyle rated this story as his favorite.
Sherlock Holme's stories are easily obtained in your local library, bookstore and the internet. The current story can be printed from this site:
