This Literature Unit Is:

"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street"
by Herman Melville

Introduction

Herman Melville is best known for his long masterpiece, Moby Dick, but he also wrote several short pieces that have come to be accepted as classics: Billy Budd, "Benito Cereno" and "Bartleby", a short-story. Melville's full title for the latter is, "Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street." On the surface it is the story of young man who "prefers" not to do things and after reading this story you will never look at the word "prefer" the same again.
