Remember the first paragraph as you are reading the rest of the essay. Thoreau was passionate about his topic and you may think that at times he goes too far. When or if you think that go back and reread the first paragraph. It may explain to you why Thoreau thought it necessary make what he calls "an extreme statement."

Also, read with a dictionary, or, if you're like me, I like to read in my comfy chair in front of my computer because I look up words or people much more quickly on the computer (I use Answers.com) than I can in a dictionary or other reference book.
